Language Arts

The goals of our comprehensive and integrated literacy and language arts program include our desire to develop proficient, lifelong readers, writers, thinkers and learners.

Our balanced literacy curriculum begins with a love for literature, phonemic awareness, shared reading and reading aloud, building towards guided reading and writing, writing workshop and readers workshop and vocabulary building. Listening and speaking skills, strategies for remembering grammar and punctuation as well as spelling and word usage are all woven into daily instruction. One of the hallmarks of our learning environment is the integration of disciplines through thematic units. Language Arts and Social Studies often serve as the core of a unit with integration of math, science, Judaic studies, Hebrew, music, art and technology.

Chicago Jewish Day School
In a few short months our 1st grade daughter became a wonderful reader. She was not alone --her entire class reads beautifully. The CJDS environment fosters not only a love of Jewish ritual and tradition but also gives our daughter and her classmates an outstanding secular education. We are very fortunate to be members of the CJDS community."
